Blur slurs, show swearing
The bChat feed and bWalletX now blur slurs behind a tap. Swearing is shown. Nothing is deleted.
What we changed
The feed reads posts from Twetch, Treechat, Peck, Fwetch and bChat. Some of them contain slurs. We needed a rule.
Our first version hid slurs and had a setting to blur strong language. We changed it a day later. Now, in bChat and bWalletX:
- A post with a slur is blurred, with a "Show anyway" button on that post.
- A display name with a slur is blurred. Tap it to see it. The @handle next to it stays visible.
- Swearing is shown as written.
- There is no 18+ switch to find in Settings.
Why
Swearing is part of how people talk, so we leave it alone.
Slurs are different. Most people don't want one in front of them without warning, so we put a blur over it and let you decide.
Nothing is deleted
Every post is on-chain. A filter only changes what you see in our apps. The post is still there and any other app can show it. The "Why blurred?" note says exactly that.
The feed API returns names as they were posted, so each app makes its own choice. The embeddable feed for other sites still drops posts with slurs.
The store edition
bWallet, the version in the App Store and Google Play, is stricter because the stores require it. Slurs are hidden with no reveal, those names show as "Hidden name", and strong language is blurred.
