Subscriptions, paid from pots
Subscriptions in bWalletX are paid from a subscription pot: money you set aside for them. We call them pots for short. They are out now in 5.1.75, at Settings › Pots. Free, with billing off.
Update, 7 Oct 2026: Pots are now listed as Subscriptions in Settings, so look for Settings › Subscriptions rather than Settings › Pots. More on the Subscriptions page.
What a pot is
If you use Monzo you know the idea. A pot is money set aside from your main balance, with a name: "Rent", "bChat", "Netflix".
In bWalletX a pot is its own small account, with its own keys and balance. It works the same way as agent accounts, with a stop button and a log of everything it paid.
Regular payments
You can add a regular payment to a pot: who to pay, how much, how often, when to start and, if you like, how many times.
Payments are made when you open the app, on or after each date. If you don't open it for a while, it catches up when you do: up to three missed payments, and it asks you before paying more than that.
Pause takes one tap and needs no confirmation. Resume is one tap too, and the payments you missed while paused are skipped, not paid. Cancel stops a payment for good.
Your phone reminds you the day before a payment is due, even with the app closed. If a pot is running low, or a payment fails, you get a notice.
The most you can lose
A pot can only spend what is in it. The pot balance is the most you can ever lose to a payment, a bug or a bad payee. The pot screens say so when you set one up.
Each pot also has a daily cap. By default it is set from the pot's largest payment, with room for a three-payment catch-up, so a fault can't empty it in one day.
Each payment is saved on the phone before it is sent. If the app crashes halfway, it sends the same saved payment again rather than making a new one, so nothing is paid twice.
Your keys stay on your phone. We looked at holding pot keys on a server so payments could go out with the app closed, and said no. That would make us custodians of your money.
The store edition
bWallet, the edition in the App Store and Play Store, has pots and regular payments to people (a $handle or paymail). Subscriptions to apps and services are in bWalletX only.
Update, 7 Oct 2026: bWallet is not in the App Store or Google Play yet. What is described here is what the store edition will have when it is published.
No charge
Pots are free. We have written down a possible charge of 1 cent a day for later, but it is switched off, and it will never be on in the store builds. If it ever comes on, pausing, cancelling and taking your money out of a pot will still be free.
Next
After that, we want payments that go out on time with the app closed, still without us holding keys. The wallet would sign a few payments in advance, each locked with nLockTime so it can't be broadcast before its date. That is the next step, not part of 5.1.75.
